Early Life and Influences
Ashok Vashist's story begins in a small village located about forty kilometers from Gurgaon. Born into a family with deep roots in values and resilience, his early life was shaped significantly by his surroundings and the people around him. His father, a navy officer, was often away, leaving Ashok under the care of his mother and extended family. This environment fostered a strong sense of community and support.
“I think those are the things, very, very important whether we had something or we didn't have anything. If anybody comes home, we ensured that the person has to eat and go.”
These early interactions instilled in him the significance of hospitality and generosity, values that would remain with him throughout his life.
The Importance of Family Values
Family was the cornerstone of Ashok's upbringing. His mother worked tirelessly to support the family, often feeding numerous guests. Despite limited resources, they prioritized kindness and camaraderie.
“Resources are never a problem. The intent behind actions matters more than material wealth."
This foundation of family values not only shaped Ashok's character but also influenced his approach to business. He learned that success is not just about financial gains but also about building relationships and fostering a supportive environment.
“If we are able to do our jobs properly, everybody will be happy about it.”
Adapting to Change: Education and Moving Schools
As Ashok's family moved frequently due to his father's job, he attended multiple schools across India. In fact, he changed schools twelve times. This constant transition forced Ashok to adapt quickly to new environments and make friends in unfamiliar settings.
“I must have learned during those days to find my way out, whether I'm with the elite or with anyone.”
His experiences taught him to value every individual, regardless of their background.
“Whether I'm talking to CEOs of the companies or to my drivers, that doesn't make a difference at all.”
This adaptability became a crucial skill that would serve him well in both his personal and professional life.
Overcoming Academic Challenges
Transitioning from a village school to a prestigious Kendriya Vidyalaya posed significant academic challenges for Ashok. He found himself in an English medium school after having studied in a Hindi medium environment.
“I had a serious problem because I was coming in from my entirely Hindi medium school.”
His grades plummeted, and for four years, he struggled to keep up.
In a particularly low moment, he scored zero in mathematics, a subject that had once been manageable for him.
“I was barely able to pass class after class.”
This period was marked by frustration and confusion, as he grappled with the language barrier and the pressure of a new academic system.
However, recognition of his struggles came from an unexpected source—his father. Instead of punishment, Ashok’s father sought to understand the root of the problem.
“My father was able to understand the problem.”
They hired a math tutor who transformed Ashok’s understanding and confidence within just a few months.
“The same guy who scored zero scored ninety-four out of hundred.”
Entering the Workforce: First Jobs and Lessons Learned
Ashok's entry into the workforce began with a strong desire to earn and learn. His first job was at Eureka Forbes, where he started as a door-to-door salesman.
“Bombay is a very, very entrepreneurial city. It was a paradigm shift for me.”
This role not only provided him with a salary but also invaluable lessons in resilience, communication, and customer engagement.
During his time at Eureka Forbes, Ashok learned the importance of humility in sales.
“The first thing you should do is if you have ego, then possibly don't go for a job.”
This mindset helped him navigate the challenges of door-to-door selling, where rejection was commonplace. He learned to knock on doors, fix appointments, and deliver product demonstrations, which became foundational skills in his journey.
“We were so naive or stupid. I was thrown into different branches and made to sit on a sofa for almost three, four days.”
This experience taught him the value of initiative and the importance of taking action, even when the situation felt overwhelming. His ability to adapt and learn quickly became apparent as he transitioned to TCI Group, where he was selected for a management training program.
The Path to Entrepreneurship
Ashok's transition from employee to entrepreneur was fueled by a desire to create something meaningful.
“It was never money making, which was the intent. It was the itch of doing something different.”
His journey began when he bought his first car, only to have it stolen three days later. This setback did not deter him; instead, it ignited his entrepreneurial spirit.
“I went to one of the leasing companies and took ten cars from them. We used to run these cars for twenty-four hours, and that loss-making proposition became twenty-five percent profit.”
This innovative approach to business marked the beginning of WTI Cabs, showcasing Ashok's ability to pivot and find solutions in challenging situations.
His initial team consisted of individuals who believed in his vision, demonstrating the power of shared purpose.
“They came on board, worked like amazing people.”
Together, they achieved remarkable growth, with revenues skyrocketing from four crores in the first year to over thirty-five crores shortly thereafter.
Navigating Challenges in Business
Ashok's journey was not without its challenges. He faced significant hurdles, including a major financial crisis when the US Bank closed down, freezing his company's funds.
“We were back to basics.”
Yet, he remained resolute, addressing his team and clients with transparency and integrity.
“First, you cannot delay the salary of your people.”
This principle guided his actions as he sought to maintain trust and morale during tough times. Ashok's leadership style reflects a deep commitment to his team, demonstrating that a strong foundation of values can help weather any storm.
“You will only learn reality from the ground.”
This perspective was particularly relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the industry faced unprecedented challenges. Ashok's adaptability and willingness to explore new avenues helped his business survive and eventually thrive, emphasizing the importance of resilience in entrepreneurship.
Life Lessons and Principles for Success
Reflecting on his life, Ashok identifies three key principles that have guided him: the importance of authenticity, embracing discomfort, and practicing honesty.
“Don't pretend. Be what you are.”
This principle has allowed him to navigate both personal and professional relationships with integrity.
“Never take decisions of forty-four degrees sitting on twenty-two degrees.”
Ashok's journey exemplifies the idea that true growth often comes from stepping outside of one's comfort zone.
“Honesty still happens to be the best policy.”
This belief has been a cornerstone of his success, fostering trust and loyalty among clients and employees alike. His life story serves as a powerful reminder that success is not merely about financial gains but also about the values we uphold and the relationships we cultivate.
