But what if, even after ticking all the conventional boxes, you still feel lost? What if the real journey only begins when you abandon the script?

This was the reality for Paramdeep Singh, President & Co-founder of Generative AI firm Shorthills AI. His recent conversation on the Inner Journeys podcast revealed a remarkably candid story – not just of building successful ventures, but of a decade-long struggle with ambiguity before finding true alignment in the entrepreneurial grind. His journey offers invaluable lessons for every founder, investor, and builder in the Indian startup ecosystem.

Check out the video of the conversation here or read on for insights.

The "Push Model": Early Life and Engineering Pressure

Paramdeep's early life, marked by frequent relocations due to his father's government job (changing maybe 7 or 8 schools!), instilled adaptability but also led him down a path chosen for him, not by him.

"My parents wanted me to be an engineer. I don't know what I wanted to be. It was mostly a push model rather than a pull model."

Despite excelling academically enough to crack the notoriously tough IIT entrance exam ("I generally attribute it to luck," he humbly notes), he describes his crucial school years (11th and 12th) as "uneasy." He wasn't passionate about Math or Physics; he was simply good at them, pushed by well-meaning parents and teachers. This disconnect between external expectation and internal drive created a persistent ambiguity.

The IIT-IIM Paradox: Freedom, Failure & Lingering Confusion

IIT Delhi offered a stark contrast – freedom.

"It's a place of freedom, I would say, after school especially. You're allowed to do whatever you want to do."

However, this newfound freedom initially led to a "mess" in his first year, where he flunked courses and admits he "misused that flexibility." It took a wake-up call after seeing poor results for him to realize he had to study, this time driven by internal realization, not external pressure. He found balance, made lifelong friends ("You are what your friends are," he reflects), but the core question of 'what next?' remained.

Even deciding to pursue an MBA from IIM Indore wasn't born from burning ambition.

"Just because of confusion, it's easy to take a decision that everybody thinks is right."

Despite securing the top CGPA at IIM, the fundamental ambiguity persisted.

Corporate Detours: Searching for the Right Fit

Paramdeep's post-MBA journey saw him cycle through prestigious roles – consulting at IBM and Accenture, even a stint in investment banking at Standard Chartered STCI Capital Markets. While the work was often challenging (he particularly enjoyed the problem-solving at Accenture), the feeling of misalignment lingered.

He felt like he was implementing systems rather than creating them, a step back from his engineering roots. Investment banking, with its "cut-throat life," was something he quickly realized he "hated." An offer from Microsoft in the US was almost accepted, only derailed by the practical (and humorous) realization of his inability to handle the DIY life abroad, particularly cooking!

The Leap: Founding EduPristine & Finding Flow

The turning point came around the time of his marriage. After years of trying different paths, clarity emerged. He enjoyed problem-solving and wanted to be in the driver's seat, owning challenges end-to-end. The long-dormant desire to be an entrepreneur finally surfaced.

In 2008, alongside friends from IIM, he co-founded EduPristine. The contrast with his corporate life was stark.

"When I started at EduPristine, life was very different. We would travel in a normal second class. It was very difficult to get appointments. But I still loved that."

Despite the initial hardships – bootstrapping with no salary, staying as a paying guest post-marriage, facing rejection – the underlying "why" had shifted. He was finally playing his own game.

This newfound alignment fueled incredible success. EduPristine became a market leader in the EdTech space, achieving over 80% year-on-year growth for more than 10 years. They raised funds from notable angel investors like Dr. Mark Mobius and eventually secured VC funding from Axel Partners. In 2018, after a strategic investment two years prior, the company was acquired by US-listed Adtalem (NYSE: ATGE), providing a successful exit for the founders.

The Next Chapter: Shorthills AI

After exiting EduPristine, Paramdeep teamed up with his co-founder to launch Shorthills AI in 2018. The goals were clear: leverage their technology background, build for the global market (starting with the US), and initially focus on high-impact data engineering and AI services rather than a product-first approach, allowing for profitability from day one.

He acknowledges the unique challenges in the Generative AI space, emphasizing the critical importance of data quality ("The foundation of any AI model is the data it learns from") and the need for responsible development and indigenous models for India ("Having our own language model would give us the ability to control the overall outcome").

Actionable Wisdom for Indian Founders

Paramdeep's journey is rich with insights applicable to anyone building in India today:

💡 Embrace the Struggle, Ditch the Cribbing: "Till you find [what you want to do], you should keep struggling. There's no point cribbing about what you're doing and not trying to figure out what you should be doing... I decided I would not crib, but I would solve for what I wanted to do."

💡 Understand Process vs. Outcome Ambiguity: Once you find work aligned with your 'why', the uncertainty of results becomes far less troubling than the uncertainty of what you should be doing. Focus on enjoying the process.

💡 The Entrepreneurial Trade-off: "Entrepreneurship: You enjoy 100 days fighting for something... If it doesn't happen, you move on. The other way is 30 days of disappointment for 1 day of salary." Choose the struggle you prefer.

🤝 Never Start Alone: "If you cannot convince even a single person to be with you to run that venture, it's going to be difficult. That support system is an absolute must." Co-founders provide validation and resilience.

⏳ Value Your Time & Relationships: "Spend time wisely... it's not coming back... Friends, family, they're a big support system. Don't take them lightly." Build genuine connections without ulterior motives.

Paramdeep Singh's story isn't just about building successful companies; it's about the messy, non-linear, human journey of finding your place. It’s a powerful reminder for the Indian startup ecosystem that success rarely follows a straight line, and the most rewarding paths are often those we carve ourselves, fueled by persistence, self-discovery, and the courage to keep searching until we find what truly makes us come alive.

Listen now!

Other ways to listen:

Apple Podcast | Amazon Music

Until next time,

Your Host,

Divakar Vijayasarathy

From IRS Officer to Plant-Based Pioneer: Abhishek Sinha's Journey to Finding—and Fighting For—His Calling

Ex-IRS officer Abhishek Sinha left a secure career for a risky venture driven by compassion. For Abhishek Sinha, Co-founder & CEO of GoodDot, it meant leaving the prestigious Indian Revenue Service (IRS) to build a plant-based food empire driven by a deep sense of purpose and compassion.

His journey, shared candidly on the Inner Journeys podcast, wasn't just about a career change; it was a profound exploration of identity, purpose, and the courage required to follow an unconventional calling. It’s a masterclass in self-discovery, resilience, and building something meaningful against the odds.

Check out the video of the conversation here or read on for insights.

The Restless Learner: Adapting Through Constant Change

Abhishek's early life was defined by movement. Studying in five different cities—Patna, Calcutta, Orissa, Hyderabad, Chennai—instilled a unique adaptability. While initially exciting, the constant uprooting brought challenges.

"Every time from there on, it was a big challenge... trying to fit it into a new city, into a new student setup, new teachers... But eventually one would adapt... You find your ways through it. So that also was quite interesting because you learn a lot during those transitions."

This early lesson in navigating change proved foundational. He also learned a crucial insight about relationships.

"The stability of a relationship is not the time you spend. It's the connection you make, right? The comfort you have... even if you don't talk with some of your friends for, say, two or three years, but when you connect, you start from where you left off."

Questioning the 'Why': Seeds of Discontent

Despite adapting, Abhishek often felt disconnected from the conventional education system. He struggled with rote learning and authority when the purpose wasn't clear.

"If something is too abstract, I really can't get my head and heart in sync to really follow that... why I should be studying this... unless I really understand if there is a merit in why I'm asked to do something."

This questioning spirit persisted. Even acing his 10th boards (coming first in his school, which he attributes partly to "pure luck") or scoring 93% in his 12th PCM exams didn't quell the underlying search for meaning. He did just enough to get by, often studying only at the last minute, lacking genuine motivation beyond passing the next hurdle. His disinterest was so profound that he once skipped school for a month and a half in 10th grade, bribing his mother by offering to do household chores instead!

The Spark ✨: Animals, Spirituality, and Finding Flow

Two forces began shaping his inner world more significantly: animals and spirituality. An early encounter feeding cows in Calcutta broke down his fear of large animals and sparked a lifelong connection. Today, he personally feeds around 100 street animals daily (part of 100-150 fed by his efforts) and cares for three dogs (one rescue) and three rescue goats at his factory.

Simultaneously, a search for deeper answers led him to explore spiritual philosophies and even consider joining the ISKCON monastic order during college.

"I was on the verge of joining the ISKCON order, leaving everything behind. But eventually, you know, realized that spirituality has to be internal. You cannot repose your spirituality on any external institution."

He came to define spirituality as something deeply personal, often found in moments of complete immersion or 'flow'.

"Spirituality is basically dissolving your identity into the moment... For me, when I feed animals... I feel just time has stopped or time has gone by very fast. So you become one with that moment... you forget your identity."

Actionable Advice: Pay attention to those moments where you lose yourself. What activities make time disappear? These "sparks," as Abhishek calls them, are clues to your unique frequency and passion. Notice them, nurture them, and they can grow into a guiding flame. 🔥

The IRS Years: Gaining Confidence, Losing Illusions

Joining the IRS in 2010 after clearing the Civil Services exam twice provided unexpected lessons. Interacting with powerful business leaders and prominent figures on equal footing demystified their aura.

"These are the guys who leave their aura outside your cabin... when you see them in their human self, you know that, okay, these are also normal guys who have really worked hard, are talented, and are lucky. For me, IRS broke all the ceilings of where I can potentially go."

Working for five or six years in Udaipur gave him confidence but didn't extinguish the desire to pursue his passion for animal welfare, a seed sown during his engineering days exploring tissue-cultured meat research.

The Leap 🚀: "Go Fly, Because I Too Flew"

The decision to leave the IRS wasn't impulsive. Abhishek had discussed the possibility with his wife even before getting the job. The desire to work towards animal welfare, possibly through biochemical engineering research or, failing that, by creating an alternative path, was always present.

The catalyst was a combination of factors: the impending birth of his son, years spent developing a plant-based meat prototype with his brother and sister while still in service, and a powerful realization inspired by a TED talk.

"What the second person [who took the leap] will say? He looked the kid in the eye and said, ‘Beta, go fly because I, too, flew'. Even before my son came, I was responsible towards him. This is what I want to do."

He calculated the risk. His worst-case scenario involved leveraging his civil services background to join a coaching center, ensuring he could cover his family's basic needs with a salary perhaps similar to the one to one-and-a-half lakh rupees he was leaving behind. The real opportunity cost felt higher if he didn't pursue his calling.

"If I don't jump and do this... If I'm so convinced... And there's a need of billions of sentient beings... If I don't do this, who's going to do it? So... It was a very easy decision."

Crucially, his wife's unwavering support made the leap possible.

Building GoodDot: Compassion Meets Commerce 💡

GoodDot isn't just a business; it's the manifestation of Abhishek's "why." But passion alone doesn't sell products. The strategy had to be practical: compete head-on with animal meat on taste and, critically, price.

"Our effort was right from the beginning to develop a product which is more affordable than animal proteins. A [plant-based] Keema Pao is ₹20. Normally a mutton keema pao will be ₹100. A chicken will be ₹60-70 maybe. So that is our strategy."

This aggressive pricing, combined with a unique distribution partnership, allowed GoodDot to reach 12,000-14,000 stores across India, including remote villages in Nagaland, Manipur, and Bihar – places typically untouched by new food tech brands. They achieved this broad reach by training a team of 20-30 chefs and managers who, in turn, trained thousands of local resellers.

Despite this scale and being India's leading plant-based meat company (also exporting to Dubai, Australia, etc.), GoodDot has achieved this with remarkable capital efficiency, having raised just $7 million in funding to date.

Life Philosophy: Churning, Connecting, and Preparing for the End

Abhishek’s journey underscores profound philosophical takeaways relevant to any builder or seeker:

Embrace the Churn: Like the mythical Samudra Manthan, self-reflection involves confronting difficulties ("Vish" or poison) to eventually uncover your unique truth ("Amrit" or nectar). Don't fear the internal struggle.

Value Failure: "I think failure is much more valuable [than success]," he states simply. It's a critical part of the learning and churning process.

Connect Beyond Silos: Break free from narrow definitions imposed by careers, institutions, or media. Connect with nature, spirituality, astronomy – the vast world beyond your immediate concerns.

Live Adventurously: Inspired by explorers like Columbus who sailed into the unknown, Abhishek sees life itself as an adventure, particularly when viewed through the lens of mortality.

"Life is nothing but preparation for death. If that is the pole star of our life, you should develop that adventurous mindset. Start lifting 1 and 2 kg dumbbell[s]. Start following your voice."

By confronting the ultimate unknown, we gain the courage to face smaller unknowns and live more authentically. It’s about recognizing the finite nature of our time and choosing to spend it fighting the "wars worth fighting," even if winning isn't guaranteed.

Abhishek’s story is a powerful reminder that the most rewarding journeys often lie off the beaten path, demanding courage, self-awareness, and a willingness to relentlessly pursue your unique calling.

Listen now!

Other ways to listen:

Apple Podcast | Amazon Music

Until next time,

Your Host,

Divakar Vijayasarathy

Dr. H.P. Singh's story offers a refreshing and profoundly important counter-narrative. True achievement, he demonstrates, is not the absence of adversity, but the ability to navigate it with unwavering resilience, unwavering values, and a deep understanding of the human element in business. This isn't just about building a company; it's about forging a legacy.

As the CMD of Satin Creditcare, Dr. Singh has transformed a modest ₹1 lakh seed investment into a publicly listed microfinance institution with an impressive AUM of ₹12,000 crores. But the numbers, while remarkable, only tell a fraction of the story. Behind the financial success lies a journey marked by personal struggles, near-catastrophic crises, and the enduring influence of a father's unwavering belief.

Check out the video of the conversation here or read on for insights.

Early Influences: The Foundation of Hard Work and a Father's Vision

Dr. Singh's foundation was built on the bedrock of hard work and a deep appreciation for the value of education. He vividly recalls his father, a dedicated government servant, cycling 30-50 kilometers every single day simply to supplement his income. This early exposure to perseverance and resourcefulness left an indelible mark.

"I remember him telling us his stories. He used to cycle about thirty to fifty kilometers every day to get some extra money."

This wasn't just about making ends meet; it was about instilling a work ethic that would become a cornerstone of Dr. Singh's character. His father's primary ambition was to provide his three sons with a convent school education, a dream that shaped Dr. Singh's early life and instilled a profound sense of responsibility as the eldest brother. This emphasis on education wasn't merely about academic achievement; it was about opening doors to a better future.

Facing Setbacks: Choosing Commerce Over Medicine

Despite his father's ardent wish for him to pursue a career in medicine, Dr. Singh found himself struggling with Science subjects in the ninth grade. This pivotal moment forced him to confront a difficult choice: follow his father's dream or forge his own path. He chose Commerce, a decision that initially caused disappointment and a sense of having let his father down.

"I flunked in Physics, I flunked in Chemistry. Somewhere, I broke my father's heart at that point of time."

This experience is a powerful reminder that the path to success is rarely linear. It highlights a common, and often painful, struggle: balancing personal aspirations with family expectations. It also underscores the crucial importance of self-awareness and the courage to choose a direction that aligns with one's own strengths and passions, even if it deviates from the expected route.

An Unexpected Fulfillment: The Honorary Doctorate, A Circle Closed

Years later, in a moment of profound personal significance, Dr. Singh received an honorary doctorate in microfinance and financial inclusion. This wasn't just a professional accolade; it was a deeply symbolic act of reconciliation and fulfillment. It was a way to honor his father's original dream, albeit in an unconventional and deeply meaningful way.

"I opened up my conversation with my dad and told him, I'm sorry I couldn't do it at that point of time, but I fulfilled your wish even though you're not there."

This anecdote speaks volumes about the enduring power of family relationships and the importance of finding ways to bridge the gaps between expectations and reality. It demonstrates that success can take many forms, and that sometimes, the most meaningful achievements are those that connect us to our past and honor those who shaped us.

The CA Journey: Perseverance, Grit, and the 1984 Riots

The path to becoming a Chartered Accountant was fraught with challenges. Dr. Singh faced intense competition, a demanding curriculum, and a grueling examination process, with pass rates hovering around a daunting 1%. This was a period that tested his limits and demanded unwavering dedication.

"When I qualified, the pass percentage used to be one percent."

His daily routine – navigating crowded buses, fulfilling his work obligations, and attending evening classes – paints a vivid picture of the sacrifices required to pursue a demanding professional goal. This period solidified his work ethic, honed his time management skills, and instilled a deep appreciation for the value of perseverance.

Adding to the pressure, Dr. Singh's CA journey coincided with the tumultuous 1984 riots. This period of national crisis added another layer of complexity and uncertainty to his already challenging life. It taught him a crucial lesson: never assume, always investigate for yourself. This principle, born from a near-miss with his exam results due to misinformation, would become a guiding principle in his future business endeavors.

Entrepreneurship: Building Satin Creditcare, Brick by Brick

Dr. Singh's entrepreneurial journey began with a relatively small venture: financing retail electronic goods. This allowed him to leverage his financial expertise while simultaneously learning the ropes of running a business. He quickly discovered the importance of building trust and fostering strong relationships with clients and partners, skills that would prove invaluable as he scaled his operations.

His father's foresight in securing office space years earlier instilled in Dr. Singh a sense of responsibility and a long-term perspective. This wasn't just about starting a business; it was about building a legacy.

The Demonetization Crisis: A Trial by Fire, Leadership Defined

The 2016 demonetization crisis was, without a doubt, the defining challenge of Dr. Singh's career. With a staggering 74% of Satin Creditcare's portfolio at risk, amounting to ₹1200 crores, the company faced a very real threat of collapse. Many industry observers predicted the company's demise.

“My lowest point during my microfinance days was demonetization.”

Dr. Singh's response to this existential crisis was nothing short of extraordinary. It provides a powerful case study in crisis leadership and offers invaluable lessons for any business leader:

Personal Investment, Personal Commitment: He injected ₹90 crores of his own funds into the company, demonstrating unwavering belief in its survival and sending a powerful signal to stakeholders.

Direct Communication, Human Connection: He made it a priority to speak directly to every single loan officer on a daily basis. This wasn't about issuing directives; it was about fostering a sense of shared purpose and providing reassurance during a time of intense uncertainty.

Relentless Focus on Recovery: He implemented a laser-focused strategy to improve collection efficiency, driving it from a dismal 20% to an astonishing 99%. This involved not just strategic planning but also relentless execution and a commitment to empowering his team.

Honesty and Transparency: To his team and his lenders.

"I used to talk to each one of my loan officers every day. We broke our collection efficiency from twenty to ninety-eight percent."

Lessons in Resilience and Leadership: A Blueprint for Success

Dr. H.P. Singh's journey offers a wealth of practical wisdom and actionable insights for anyone navigating the complexities of leadership and entrepreneurship:

Embrace Direct Engagement: Don't rely solely on reports, data, or the opinions of intermediaries. Get involved directly, especially during times of crisis. Understand the ground reality firsthand.

Prioritize Long-Term Vision: Learn to look five years down the line. His father booking a telephone connection, years in advance, exemplifies planning.

Uphold Integrity as a Core Value: Honesty and transparency are not just ethical imperatives; they are the foundation of trust, which is essential for building sustainable success.

Transform Crises into Opportunities: Adversity can be a powerful catalyst for growth, innovation, and the development of new capabilities. View challenges as opportunities to learn, adapt, and emerge stronger.

Communication is the Lifeline: Open, frequent, and honest communication is paramount, especially during times of uncertainty and change. Connect with your team on a personal level.

Self-Reliance is Key: While collaboration is important, cultivate a mindset of self-reliance. Take ownership of your challenges and be proactive in finding solutions.

Meritocracy Matters: He navigated and continues to navigate an ecosystem that rewards connections.

A Legacy of Resilience: More Than Just Business

Dr. H.P. Singh's story is ultimately a testament to the power of the human spirit. It's a reminder that true success is measured not only by financial achievements but also by the values we uphold, the challenges we overcome, and the impact we have on the lives of others.

"Be truthful to yourself and truthful till whatever time you can."

His journey is an inspiration to anyone facing adversity, a powerful reminder that with resilience, determination, and a commitment to ethical leadership, even the most daunting obstacles can be overcome. It's a story that deserves to be shared, studied, and celebrated.

Listen now!
<iframe class="spotify-wrap podcast" data-attrs="{"image":"https://i.scdn.co/image/ab6765630000ba8af3c9c23f2e0de0310fc734b3","title":"Dr. H.P. This nomadic existence, marked by frequent shifts in schools, environments, and social circles, became the crucible in which his remarkable adaptability was forged.

“I never got settled anywhere. We don’t have a childhood friend who is with you for fifteen years. It never happened.”

This lack of permanence, rather than fostering a sense of instability, instilled a deep-seated resilience. He learned to forge meaningful connections quickly, a skill that would prove invaluable in his entrepreneurial pursuits, where building rapid rapport and trust is essential.

Schooling as a Training Ground: Lessons in Resilience and the Art of Overcoming Defeat

Abhay's schooling was punctuated by formative incidents that left indelible marks. A poignant farewell from his seventh-grade classmates underscored his ability to form deep bonds, even in brief encounters. Later, a humiliating defeat as table tennis team captain became a catalyst for growth. Instead of succumbing to disappointment, he learned a powerful lesson.

“Don’t take the failure lightly. You can still work on it and make it happen.”

This experience taught him the importance of analyzing setbacks, identifying areas for improvement, and demonstrating the transformative power of perseverance. Two years later, he led his team to victory, proving that setbacks are not endpoints but opportunities for profound growth.

Confronting Mortality: A Life-Altering Perspective Shift

A near-fatal accident during a family trip profoundly altered Abhay’s perspective. Surviving against all odds, he emerged with a renewed sense of urgency and fearlessness.

“There’s no guarantee. There’s nothing permanent. Keep trying. Keep doing.”

This brush with mortality instilled a deep appreciation for the present and a willingness to embrace risks, shaping his approach to both life and business. He learned that time is a precious commodity and that opportunities, once missed, may never return.

College and the Dawn of Independence: Self-Reliance and Leadership Development

College marked a pivotal transition, as Abhay ventured away from home for the first time. His father’s encouragement to navigate the admission process independently fostered a strong sense of self-reliance, a trait that would become a hallmark of his entrepreneurial approach.

“You have to learn yourself. You have to take your decision and own it.”

College exposed him to diverse perspectives and challenged him to assert his identity. His involvement in student elections taught him about the intricacies of competition, the importance of engaging with peers, and the art of persuasion, laying the groundwork for his future leadership roles.

“I won the election with five or six votes. That campaign taught me how to survive, learn, and fight.”

Venturing into the Professional World: Building a Foundation for Entrepreneurship

Upon graduation, Abhay chose to forge his own path, declining a government job recommendation. He secured a management trainee position, marking the beginning of his professional journey. He quickly learned that success was not solely about academic achievement but also about adaptability, strategic thinking, and the ability to navigate complex organizational dynamics.

“You can become a distinction without knowing anything. It’s about the smart work.”

These early experiences provided invaluable insights into the workings of the corporate world, shaping his understanding of the professional landscape and preparing him for the challenges of entrepreneurship.

The Genesis of Entrepreneurial Ventures: From Malamall to Recykal

Abhay’s entrepreneurial journey began with Malamall.com, a pioneering e-commerce venture born from a keen observation of unmet local product demand.

“I wanted to build something that had no boundaries. The internet was the perfect canvas.”

Though ahead of its time, Malamaal provided critical lessons about timing, team building, and the importance of strategic decision-making.

“Being ahead of your time can be just as detrimental as being behind it. Timing is crucial. Learn to say no at the right time. It’s a skill that can save you from many pitfalls.”

Applying the lessons learned, Abhay launched Martjack, India’s first SaaS company, followed by Recykal, a sustainable waste management platform.

“Building a business should never just be about profit. It should also be about creating value for society.”

With Recykal, Abhay demonstrated that entrepreneurship can be a powerful force for social good, creating a platform that connects waste generators with recyclers and contributes to a circular economy.

“When you align your team with a shared purpose, you create a powerful engine for success.”

Reflections on Entrepreneurship and the Pursuit of Purpose: A Continuous Journey of Growth

Abhay’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of resilience, adaptability, and a relentless pursuit of purpose. He believes that setbacks are opportunities for growth and that challenges are essential for personal and professional development.

“Crisis is the best teacher. It forces you to confront your weaknesses and adapt.”

He emphasizes the importance of patience, perseverance, and trusting one’s intuition, recognizing that the entrepreneurial journey is a marathon, not a sprint.

“You have to be prepared for the long haul. Entrepreneurship is a marathon, not a sprint.” “If you follow your heart, success will follow.”

Abhay’s story is a compelling reminder that true success is not a destination but a continuous journey of learning, growth, and making a meaningful impact on the world.

Listen now!

Other ways to listen:

Apple Podcast | Amazon Music

Until next time,

Your Host,

Divakar Vijayasarathy

Deep Bajaj (Sirona) on Doubling Down on Strengths

Deep Bajaj's story is a testament to resilience and the power of turning setbacks into opportunities.

Divakar Vijayasarathy

Deep Bajaj's story is a testament to resilience and the power of turning setbacks into opportunities. School life, while routine, was punctuated by memorable monsoons and the looming pressure of board exams. However, a major turning point came when he failed Mathematics in ninth grade.

“The fear of disappointing my parents was a huge driver for me. I never wanted to go through that feeling again.”

This failure became a catalyst. It ignited a determination to excel, refocusing his efforts on his strengths and shaping his approach to future challenges.

Early Career: Sales, Resilience, and Realizations

Choosing employment over immediate higher education, Deep entered the world of sales. His first job, selling educational materials, was a trial by fire. It provided income and sparked a passion for sales.

“I realised that I could create opportunities for myself, which was empowering.”

He learned resilience through experiences. He dragged his bike without fuel; he was that resourceful. These early experiences taught him the value of resourcefulness and the enabling power of financial stability.

Higher Education & Personal Growth

Despite his sales success, Deep pursued a Master's degree in Australia, balancing studies with multiple jobs. This period was transformative, teaching him responsibility and time management.

“Missing that deadline was a wake-up call. It taught me that being on time is crucial, and I’ve carried that lesson with me ever since.”

This experience solidified his commitment to personal growth and financial responsibility, laying the groundwork for his entrepreneurial future.

Entrepreneurial Beginnings: Events and Problem-Solving

Returning to India, Deep dove into events management, driven by a desire to create memorable experiences. However, he quickly recognized the logistical challenges, particularly in maintaining clean facilities.

“I found myself in a space where I wanted to solve problems, even the taboo ones that no one else wanted to address.”

This problem-solving mindset would become central to his later success.

Navigating Partnerships & Exits

Deep's early ventures involved partnerships, which brought valuable lessons about equity and shared vision. Exiting a partnership where he held a minority stake, despite significant contributions, was a difficult but crucial decision.

“Exiting a partnership is never easy, especially when you respect the other person. But sometimes, you have to prioritise your own vision.”

This experience underscored the importance of equitable collaborations and aligning personal ambitions with business goals.

Building with Family Focus

Deep then transitioned into a family business that deals with handmade carpets, alongside his wife. He approached this new challenge humbly, recognizing his wife's expertise.

“I learned that in family businesses, it’s crucial to acknowledge roles and responsibilities clearly. This clarity reduces conflict and enhances collaboration.”

This demonstrated his adaptability and ability to integrate his entrepreneurial spirit within a family dynamic, focusing on collaboration and shared success.

The Sirona Moment: Addressing Taboos

The inception of Sirona, a company focused on women's health and hygiene, marked a pivotal moment. Sirona was born from a commitment to break societal taboos and provide innovative solutions.

“Empowering women is not just a mission; it is a movement toward a healthier and more inclusive future.”

This venture reflects Deep's dedication to tackling overlooked issues and driving meaningful societal change.

Key Takeaways from Deep's Journey

Deep's story offers several powerful lessons for professionals and entrepreneurs:

This, too, shall pass: Embrace the temporary nature of adversity.

The choices you make decide the life you lead: Be intentional in your decisions.

If you're at it, you will crack it: Persistence and a willingness to learn from failures are key to success.

Deep's journey is a compelling example of how resilience, adaptability, and a focus on solving real-world problems can lead to significant personal and professional growth. It's a reminder that setbacks can be powerful catalysts for innovation and success.

Listen now!

Other ways to listen:

Apple Podcast | Amazon Music

Until next time,

Your Host,

Divakar Vijayasarathy

Ashok Vashist (WTI Cabs) on Embracing the Discomfort

Ashok Vashist shares his extraordinary journey from a small village to becoming the founder of WTI Cabs. Born into a family with deep roots in values and resilience, his early life was shaped significantly by his surroundings and the people around him. His father, a navy officer, was often away, leaving Ashok under the care of his mother and extended family. This environment fostered a strong sense of community and support.

“I think those are the things, very, very important whether we had something or we didn't have anything. If anybody comes home, we ensured that the person has to eat and go.”

These early interactions instilled in him the significance of hospitality and generosity, values that would remain with him throughout his life.

The Importance of Family Values

Family was the cornerstone of Ashok's upbringing. His mother worked tirelessly to support the family, often feeding numerous guests. Despite limited resources, they prioritized kindness and camaraderie.

“Resources are never a problem. The intent behind actions matters more than material wealth."

This foundation of family values not only shaped Ashok's character but also influenced his approach to business. He learned that success is not just about financial gains but also about building relationships and fostering a supportive environment.

“If we are able to do our jobs properly, everybody will be happy about it.”

Adapting to Change: Education and Moving Schools

As Ashok's family moved frequently due to his father's job, he attended multiple schools across India. In fact, he changed schools twelve times. This constant transition forced Ashok to adapt quickly to new environments and make friends in unfamiliar settings.

“I must have learned during those days to find my way out, whether I'm with the elite or with anyone.”

His experiences taught him to value every individual, regardless of their background.

“Whether I'm talking to CEOs of the companies or to my drivers, that doesn't make a difference at all.”

This adaptability became a crucial skill that would serve him well in both his personal and professional life.

Overcoming Academic Challenges

Transitioning from a village school to a prestigious Kendriya Vidyalaya posed significant academic challenges for Ashok. He found himself in an English medium school after having studied in a Hindi medium environment.

“I had a serious problem because I was coming in from my entirely Hindi medium school.”

His grades plummeted, and for four years, he struggled to keep up.

In a particularly low moment, he scored zero in mathematics, a subject that had once been manageable for him.

“I was barely able to pass class after class.”

This period was marked by frustration and confusion, as he grappled with the language barrier and the pressure of a new academic system.

However, recognition of his struggles came from an unexpected source—his father. Instead of punishment, Ashok’s father sought to understand the root of the problem.

“My father was able to understand the problem.”

They hired a math tutor who transformed Ashok’s understanding and confidence within just a few months.

“The same guy who scored zero scored ninety-four out of hundred.”

Entering the Workforce: First Jobs and Lessons Learned

Ashok's entry into the workforce began with a strong desire to earn and learn. His first job was at Eureka Forbes, where he started as a door-to-door salesman.

“Bombay is a very, very entrepreneurial city. It was a paradigm shift for me.”

This role not only provided him with a salary but also invaluable lessons in resilience, communication, and customer engagement.

During his time at Eureka Forbes, Ashok learned the importance of humility in sales.

“The first thing you should do is if you have ego, then possibly don't go for a job.”

This mindset helped him navigate the challenges of door-to-door selling, where rejection was commonplace. He learned to knock on doors, fix appointments, and deliver product demonstrations, which became foundational skills in his journey.

“We were so naive or stupid. I was thrown into different branches and made to sit on a sofa for almost three, four days.”

This experience taught him the value of initiative and the importance of taking action, even when the situation felt overwhelming. His ability to adapt and learn quickly became apparent as he transitioned to TCI Group, where he was selected for a management training program.

The Path to Entrepreneurship

Ashok's transition from employee to entrepreneur was fueled by a desire to create something meaningful.

“It was never money making, which was the intent. It was the itch of doing something different.”

His journey began when he bought his first car, only to have it stolen three days later. This setback did not deter him; instead, it ignited his entrepreneurial spirit.

“I went to one of the leasing companies and took ten cars from them. We used to run these cars for twenty-four hours, and that loss-making proposition became twenty-five percent profit.”

This innovative approach to business marked the beginning of WTI Cabs, showcasing Ashok's ability to pivot and find solutions in challenging situations.

His initial team consisted of individuals who believed in his vision, demonstrating the power of shared purpose.

“They came on board, worked like amazing people.”

Together, they achieved remarkable growth, with revenues skyrocketing from four crores in the first year to over thirty-five crores shortly thereafter.

Navigating Challenges in Business

Ashok's journey was not without its challenges. He faced significant hurdles, including a major financial crisis when the US Bank closed down, freezing his company's funds.

“We were back to basics.”

Yet, he remained resolute, addressing his team and clients with transparency and integrity.

“First, you cannot delay the salary of your people.”

This principle guided his actions as he sought to maintain trust and morale during tough times. Ashok's leadership style reflects a deep commitment to his team, demonstrating that a strong foundation of values can help weather any storm.

“You will only learn reality from the ground.”

This perspective was particularly relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the industry faced unprecedented challenges. Ashok's adaptability and willingness to explore new avenues helped his business survive and eventually thrive, emphasizing the importance of resilience in entrepreneurship.

Life Lessons and Principles for Success

Reflecting on his life, Ashok identifies three key principles that have guided him: the importance of authenticity, embracing discomfort, and practicing honesty.

“Don't pretend. Be what you are.”

This principle has allowed him to navigate both personal and professional relationships with integrity.

“Never take decisions of forty-four degrees sitting on twenty-two degrees.”

Ashok's journey exemplifies the idea that true growth often comes from stepping outside of one's comfort zone.

“Honesty still happens to be the best policy.”

This belief has been a cornerstone of his success, fostering trust and loyalty among clients and employees alike. His life story serves as a powerful reminder that success is not merely about financial gains but also about the values we uphold and the relationships we cultivate.

Listen now!

Other ways to listen:

Apple Podcast | Amazon Music

Until next time,

Your Host,

Divakar Vijayasarathy

Atul Shinghal (Scripbox) on Planning for Failure

Atul Shinghal, founder of Scripbox, shares his inspiring journey of self-discovery and growth.

Divakar Vijayasarathy

Atul Shinghal, founder of Scripbox, shares his inspiring journey of self-discovery and growth. From a humble yet privileged upbringing to becoming a successful entrepreneur, his story is one of constant adaptation and resilience. In this conversation, Atul reflects on pivotal moments in his life, offering insights on personal development, overcoming challenges, and embracing change with an open heart and unyielding spirit.

Check out the video of the conversation here or read on for insights.

Childhood and Early Education

Born into a privileged yet frugal upbringing as an "army brat," Atul's early life was defined by movement and change. At the tender age of six, he was sent to boarding school, a transition many would find daunting. Yet, young Atul embraced it with an openness that would become a hallmark of his life. He was adaptable, avoided regrets, and didn't carry grudges.

"I typically avoid regrets. I typically avoid looking over my shoulder. I mean, it sounds saintly, but I don't carry a grudge. It just isn't in my ecosystem."

His schooling was a tapestry of seven different institutions, a constant shift that might have disrupted others, but Atul thrived.

"... depends on how friendly and affable you are. What are you looking for? Some deep connections happen in a two, three month period."

Despite the challenges of changing schools every couple of years, he made lifelong friendships and learned to navigate different social settings with ease.

Navigating Academic Challenges

As Atul progressed through his schooling, he faced academic challenges. He experienced a significant setback in grade ten when he received unexpectedly low marks. This moment was pivotal in shaping his approach to failure.

"It hits you hard. That was a change curve. Shock, denial, anger, then acceptance."

Instead of succumbing to despair, he used this setback as motivation to improve, ultimately achieving much better results in subsequent years.

Experiences at IIT Madras

His time at IIT Madras brought another humbling experience. Landing in naval architecture, perceived as the "dumbest guy" in the hierarchy, challenged his ego.

"It is all your own self-image, which is, I mean, it's a coloured glass view."

Atul recognized the presence of individuals far more capable than himself, a realization that fostered humility and a focus on his strengths. Rigorous academics and active participation in sports marked his time at IIT.

"I think what IIT taught you was, apart from a phenomenal network of friends, was the numerical ability, the ability to solve problems at pace, the structured analytical thinking, the ability to take exams at short notice."

Journey to IIM Bangalore

After completing his engineering degree, Atul pursued an MBA at IIM Bangalore. His choice was driven by a desire to further his education and expand his career opportunities. At IIM, he found a community of like-minded individuals who shared his aspirations.

"The only thing I remember is making a brilliant set of friends. We are all on holiday together even now."

This camaraderie enriched his experience and the importance of relationships in personal and professional growth. His journey through IIT and IIM was not just about academic achievements; it was about forging connections that would last a lifetime.

Lessons from the Corporate World

Atul's transition to the corporate world, marked by his stint at Madura Coats, was a masterclass in learning by doing. He immersed himself in every aspect of the business, from packing boxes in warehouses to selling thread in remote villages. These experiences taught him the value of hard work, ethics, and empathy.

"The first is management training. I wish other companies did this more. One year of training, and you must do every job in the company."

He understood what it meant to be in the shoes of a retailer, making sales calls in forty-eight-degree weather. Such experiences taught him humility and the importance of understanding the ground realities of operations, lessons that would stay with him throughout his career.

Lessons from Standard Chartered

After several years at Madura Coats, Atul transitioned to Standard Chartered, where he encountered a different corporate culture. This move marked a significant shift in his career, as he was now part of a global organization with a more structured approach to banking.

"Standard Chartered was a phenomenal experience. The learning curve was steep, and I realized that working in an MNC meant lower input and higher output."

His role challenged him to adapt to a fast-paced environment where he had to make quick decisions and think strategically. The exposure to international markets and diverse teams broadened his perspective, preparing him for future entrepreneurial pursuits.

The Entrepreneurial Leap and the Death of a Dream

The seeds of entrepreneurship were sown during a challenging period abroad, where Atul learned the importance of due diligence and having an exit plan.

"Think about what failure could look like, and what your exit plan would be if that failure happened."

This experience, coupled with his time at Standard Chartered and Capital One, culminated in a pivotal moment. While at Old Mutual in South Africa, Atul was tasked with building a digital venture from scratch. It was a journey of exhilarating highs, culminating in creation of a state-of-the-art contact centre and a comprehensive business plan.

"Probably one of the most proud moments of my life. We were so far ahead. In 2008, we would have gone live with a venture with banking, general insurance, and life insurance all blended into one."

However, the global financial crisis intervened, leading to the heartbreaking decision to shut down the project. Standing before his team of 250 people, Atul announced the death of their dream.

Yet, it was also the germination of a new beginning.

Rising from the Ashes: Embracing the Entrepreneurial Spirit

Returning to India, Atul initially considered a sabbatical, but the entrepreneurial spirit rekindled. Partnering with his friend, he co-founded Probe Information Services and, later, Scripbox, fueled by a desire to build something meaningful in the burgeoning Indian landscape. The journey was filled with challenges, but his unwavering belief in the mission kept him focused.

"I always believed that India was booming, and the next twenty, thirty years belong to India."

Under Atul's leadership, Scripbox grew to become a trusted name in the investment space, helping countless individuals navigate the complexities of personal finance.

The Pillars of a Meaningful Life

Reflecting on his journey, Atul shares four key principles that he believes are essential for a fulfilling life, irrespective of one's chosen path.

Humility:

"Don't confuse who you are with what you do."

Curiosity:

"The curiosity to learn, the curiosity, what will happen if I do this, having a plan, thinking about options is critical."

Lack of Fear of Failure:

"If you're always scared of that, boss, this could go wrong, you'll not do things."

Respect and Gratitude:

"Complete gratitude, complete respect for everybody around."

Key Learnings

Defining Failure and Knowing When to Stop: Atul learned that failure is not a sign of personal inadequacy but rather a part of the journey. He emphasizes the importance of knowing when to pivot or stop—understanding that continuing on a failing path can be more detrimental than acknowledging when a venture has reached its limit. This mindset helped him move forward rather than holding on to something that no longer served its purpose.

It's Not a Venture That Gets Shut, It's a Dream That Dies: Atul's experience with the closure of his venture at Old Mutual underscored a profound truth. It's not the business that fails; it's the dream that dies. This realization allowed him to emotionally separate himself from the setback, viewing it as an opportunity to forge new dreams and begin afresh.

Turning endings into Beginnings: Atul’s ability to adapt seamlessly to changing circumstances—whether it's a corporate restructuring, a venture’s failure, or a shift in life’s direction—has been key to his resilience. He advocates for embracing the end of a chapter with grace, knowing that letting go is often the first step in creating a new path.

Atul’s story reminds us that setbacks are inevitable, but they can also be the most profound teachers, shaping us into the individuals we are meant to be. His life is a beacon, illuminating the path for those who seek to navigate the complexities of life with grace, humility, and an unshakeable spirit.

Listen now!

Other ways to listen:

Apple Podcast | Amazon Music

Until next time,

Your Host,

Divakar Vijayasarathy

Amit Agarwal (NoBroker) - the small town boy who minted a unicorn

Amit Agarwal's journey from a small-town boy to the founder of NoBroker is a compelling narrative of resilience, learning, and self-discovery.

Divakar Vijayasarathy

Amit Agarwal's journey from a small-town boy to the founder of NoBroker is a compelling narrative of resilience, learning, and self-discovery.

I had the honour of interviewing him on the Inner Journeys podcast, and we explored the pivotal moments that shaped his entrepreneurial spirit, highlighting the lessons of personal growth and overcoming adversity.

Check out the video of the conversation here or read on for insights.

Introduction to Amit's Philosophy

Amit Agarwal's life philosophy is deeply rooted in resilience and the relentless pursuit of self-improvement. He believes that life's challenges are not just obstacles but opportunities for growth. This perspective shapes his approach to both personal and professional endeavors.

"You can only try your best. If the result is not coming, then perhaps you try a little more, try differently, but never give up."

This mindset is a testament to his belief that persistence is key. The journey is as important as the destination, and every setback can be a stepping stone to greater success.

Childhood Influences: Early Lessons in Resilience

Growing up, he faced various challenges that later shaped his character and entrepreneurial spirit. From a young age, he was encouraged to strive for excellence, often competing with equally ambitious peers.

"The subconscious message was that there's no point in giving up. If you try, something works out."

This belief was instilled in him by his family and reinforced through his experiences in school. Failure was not seen as an end but a necessary part of the learning process.

The IIT Experience: A Journey of Self-Discovery

Entering IIT Kanpur was a transformative experience for Amit. Coming from a background where he had always excelled, he suddenly found himself surrounded by brilliant minds. The initial shock was overwhelming, leading to a steep learning curve.

"Being a topper in my district meant nothing. Here, everyone was smart. I felt ordinary in an ocean of excellence."

This realization was humbling. The pressure to perform was immense, and Amit struggled to adapt to the rigorous academic environment.

However, this period of struggle prompted a critical shift in Amit's perspective. He learned to embrace collaboration over competition, a lesson that would serve him well throughout his career.

"Instead of fighting the system, I learned to understand it."

Adapting to Change: From Competition to Collaboration

Amit's journey through IIT taught him the value of collaboration. Initially, he viewed his classmates as competitors, which hindered his ability to seek assistance. However, as he began to accept his situation, he realized that working together could lead to greater success.

"I had to figure out how the system works, mingle with others, and ask for help. It was a humbling experience."

This shift in mindset not only improved his grades but also enriched his social interactions, allowing him to build lasting friendships with some of the brightest individuals he had ever met.

Through this experience, Amit learned that true strength lies in the ability to adapt and collaborate. This lesson became a cornerstone of his entrepreneurial journey, where teamwork is often the key to overcoming challenges.

Overcoming Personal Challenges: Love and Education

As Amit transitioned from IIT to IIM Ahmedabad, he encountered personal challenges that tested his resilience. During this time, he developed a close relationship which became a source of both joy and stress. Their relationship faced external pressures from their families, who opposed their union due to caste differences.

"My objective was to convince her family, but each phone call became a distraction from my studies."

Balancing romance and education proved difficult, leading to a decline in his academic performance. The emotional turmoil was palpable, but Amit navigated this challenging period with determination.

Ultimately, the love story culminated in marriage, which Amit regards as one of the best decisions of his life.

"Out of all the things that have happened in my life, marrying her was the best thing."

This experience taught him that personal happiness and professional aspirations can coexist, even amidst adversity.

Career Path: From Cognizant to IIM Ahmedabad

After completing his education at IIT, Amit joined Cognizant, where he honed his skills in the IT sector. However, he quickly realized that while he was good at coding, it did not ignite his passion. This led him to consider pursuing an MBA, a decision that would set the stage for his future endeavors.

He recalls the pivotal moment when he stood in line for a US visa.

"I realized I didn’t want to pursue research. I wanted to solve problems, not dwell on one for years."

This epiphany prompted him to withdraw from the visa process and focus on his job at Cognizant instead.

As he prepared for the CAT exam, Amit faced fierce competition but emerged victorious, securing a spot at IIM Ahmedabad.

"It was a challenging environment, but I was ready to tackle it."

The Shift to Consulting: Finding Excitement in Challenges

Amit's transition to consulting was not born from a passion for the field, but rather from the allure of the profession during his time at PwC.

"I got into PwC management consulting... not because I wanted it or I had any love for it, but because everybody wanted it."

This decision was driven by the prevailing trends and the excitement that consulting promised.

His tenure at PwC spanned nearly a decade, characterized by a demanding schedule that many would find overwhelming.

"You start Monday morning, wake up at three thirty... and when you are coming back on Friday evening, the last flights are always delayed."

Yet, amidst the chaos, Amit discovered a profound love for consulting. He thrived on its challenges, relishing the satisfaction of solving complex problems in various industries.

What fascinated him the most was the transformation from initial hostility to collaboration.

"The moment I reach the client's place, everybody's hostile... and then you realize that they are hostile towards you as a concept."

His ability to navigate these hostile waters and turn adversaries into allies became a hallmark of his consulting career, showcasing the importance of resilience and strategic communication.

The Decision to Leave: Midlife Crisis and New Beginnings

After years in consulting, Amit faced a pivotal moment that many encountered in their careers: a midlife crisis. At thirty-five, he questioned his path, particularly after losing a mentor.

"I realized that being a partner requires a lot of political skills... and that is not something which I'm not good at."

This realization prompted him to reassess his career trajectory.

"No one has ever become wealthy by doing a job."

He felt the need to break free from the confines of a stable job and explore the unknown. This phase of uncertainty was daunting, yet it sparked a newfound openness to possibilities.

"For the first time, I realized that I don't know what the next step is."

This openness soon set the stage for a transformative leap into entrepreneurship.

The Birth of NoBroker: A Leap of Faith

The idea of NoBroker emerged during this period of exploration and uncertainty. Amit was allowed to join friends who were developing this innovative concept.

"I decided that it is better to join them, be a part of NoBroker rather than basically taking the job."

Amit's leap into entrepreneurship was not without its challenges. The initial days were uncertain, as they navigated the complexities of launching a business in a space dominated by traditional brokers. He recalls the skepticism they faced from investors, who questioned why a similar model had not been successful elsewhere.

"Investors kept telling us if it's such a good idea, why hasn't somebody done it?"

Facing Adversity: The Early Days of NoBroker

The early days of NoBroker were marked by significant hurdles. Amit faced fierce resistance from established players in the market. He recounts a harrowing experience when brokers attacked their office.

"We were completely ill-equipped to handle a situation... we just called police from the normal phone number."

Despite these challenges, Amit remained resolute. He learned the importance of persistence and adaptability in the face of adversity.

"The only thing which investor is perhaps looking for is whether you are sure about it, whether you are going to chase it like crazy,"

Through sheer determination, Amit and his team persevered. They bootstrapped for a year, grappling with funding challenges and market skepticism. Yet, they remained frugal, focusing on product-market fit amidst the chaos. For Arjun Nair, the quest for purpose was ignited in his formative years in Trivandrum. Growing up, he faced a unique set of challenges that shaped his early understanding of success and fulfillment. Arjun often reflects on how he struggled to fit into conventional moulds, particularly within the academic system.

"I wasn’t a great student. In fact, I was a very poor student. I just couldn’t fit into the traditional academic system."

This struggle would serve as a catalyst for his later pursuits. The pivotal moment came when tragedy struck. At just sixteen, Arjun faced the sudden loss of his father. This event marked a seismic shift in his life, compelling him to reassess his priorities and responsibilities.

"It was a reset. Suddenly, I had to take ownership and figure out what to do with my life."

This loss not only instilled a sense of urgency in him but also a realization that he could no longer rely on external guidance. The journey of self-discovery began, leading him to explore different avenues of knowledge and experience. Arjun’s childhood experiences laid the groundwork for his future explorations, pushing him to seek purpose beyond mere academic achievement.

The Pivotal Moment: A Life Altered

Faced with the responsibility of being a role model for his younger brother and a source of strength for his mother, he embraced the challenge head-on. His response to this adversity was profound.

"I need to be a role model. I have to make sure that I’m not going to screw up."

This newfound responsibility ignited a fierce determination within him. Arjun began to take his education seriously, working diligently to improve himself academically. He recognized that his future depended on his ability to adapt and grow from this moment of loss. The emotional metamorphosis he experienced was not just a reaction to grief; it was a powerful motivator that drove him to pursue opportunities previously out of reach.

Arjun’s resolve led him to seek out higher education in the United States, where he hoped to cultivate the skills necessary for a successful career. This aspiration was fueled by a desire to honor his father's memory and ensure a better future for his family.

"It became very important for me that I wouldn’t be a cause of any kind of difficulty moving forward."

From Student to Innovator: The Quest for Knowledge

Transitioning from the confines of Trivandrum to the expansive opportunities in the U.S. was a transformative leap for Arjun. His time at Duke University marked a significant chapter in his journey. As he delved into biomedical engineering, he was not just pursuing a degree; he was laying the foundation for his future endeavors.

"I wanted to really go deeper into that and see how you could actually do something to prevent it."

His academic experience at Duke was rife with exploration and discovery. Engaging in groundbreaking research in heart electrophysiology, Arjun was at the forefront of innovation. However, he quickly realized that the pace of research did not align with his desire for immediate impact. This realization was pivotal, as it sparked his interest in entrepreneurship.

Arjun’s exposure to entrepreneurship during his time at Duke was eye-opening. He attended lectures that introduced him to the idea of building a business, igniting a passion within him to create and innovate.

"It was the first time it crossed my mind that you could actually build a business."

This newfound ambition propelled him toward further education at MIT, where he honed his entrepreneurial skills and began to grasp the intricacies of launching a startup.

Embracing Entrepreneurship: The Leap of Faith

Arjun’s return to India was not merely a geographical shift; it was a deliberate step towards realizing his entrepreneurial dreams. After several years of exploration, he was ready to commit to building something of his own. The leap into entrepreneurship was fraught with uncertainty, but Arjun's determination was unwavering.

"Now I’m committed to this thing about building a business."

With two young children and a wife who had paused her career, the stakes were high. Arjun faced the daunting challenge of starting a business in a competitive landscape. His early ventures were met with struggles, but he viewed these as opportunities for growth rather than setbacks.

"It was not a small period of time. I was really trying to figure out how to make things work."

This perseverance paid off when he co-founded Great Learning, a venture that would eventually thrive and gain recognition on a global scale. Arjun's journey into entrepreneurship was not just about financial success; it was about creating a legacy and providing for his family.

The Impact of Family: Balancing Personal and Professional Life

As Arjun navigated the complexities of entrepreneurship, the importance of family became increasingly clear. His journey was not undertaken in isolation; it was a collective effort that involved the support of his wife and children.

"I think it was a great experience for them for the last one, two, three, four years."

His family's involvement in his journey added a layer of richness to the experience. Traveling together and sharing adventures fostered a unique bond that strengthened their relationships. Arjun's commitment to family was evident in his decision to prioritize quality time with them, even amidst the demands of building a business.

In the midst of challenges, Arjun found solace in the support of his family. He recognized that their collective strength was essential to overcoming obstacles.

"We spend a lot of time together as a family... that kind of got us close."

This emphasis on family not only enriched Arjun's personal life but also influenced his professional journey. The lessons learned from balancing family responsibilities with entrepreneurial aspirations became integral to his approach as a leader.

The Power of Team: Building a Successful Business

In the world of startups, the strength of your team can make or break your business. For Arjun Nair, the collaborative spirit and talent of his colleagues were pivotal in his entrepreneurial journey.

"You need to have a very talented and, you know, strong team to work with."

Building Great Learning was not just about having a great idea; it was about assembling a group of individuals who shared a common vision and complemented each other's strengths.

"It’s all about recognizing that this team is the team that I want to build this business with."

He believes that every successful startup is a result of collective effort. Each team member brings unique skills and perspectives, which can lead to innovative solutions and a more resilient business.

Reflections on Luck and Preparation

Arjun often talks about the interplay between luck and preparation in the entrepreneurial landscape. He explains that luck is not merely a random occurrence but is often a byproduct of being ready when opportunities arise.

"Preparation precedes luck."

For Arjun, luck manifests as a set of circumstances that favor one's unique skills and experiences. He reflects on his own journey, noting that many opportunities may have passed him by simply because he wasn't prepared to recognize them.

"Maybe there were many more opportunities, but there were certain limiting mindsets or doubt about my own capability."

Arjun's journey highlights that while luck can be a factor, it is the preparation and mindset that ultimately determine success. He encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to embrace continuous learning and self-improvement, as this will enhance their ability to recognize and act upon fortunate circumstances.

Looking Ahead: Embracing New Experiences

As Arjun continues to evolve, he embraces new experiences with enthusiasm. His current phase is marked by exploration—taking classes in acting, drawing, and even learning volleyball.

"I'm enjoying taking classes and trying to build a new set of skills."

This willingness to step outside his comfort zone reflects a commitment to personal growth. Arjun's journey is not just about business success; it’s about enriching his life through diverse experiences. He understands that learning does not stop after formal education. Instead, it is a lifelong journey that keeps the mind sharp and the spirit engaged.

Moreover, Arjun emphasizes the importance of balancing work and personal life. He recognizes that spending time with family and nurturing relationships is crucial.

"Spending time with family... that also is something I didn't do for the first few years of building a business."

This balance allows him to recharge and find inspiration in different areas of life, fueling his creativity and passion for work.

Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

For those looking to embark on their entrepreneurial journey, Arjun has a wealth of insights to share. He emphasizes the importance of identifying a genuine problem to solve.

"You need a product or a service that people want."

This foundational principle is critical. The success of a venture hinges on its ability to address a real need in the market. Additionally, Arjun advises aspiring entrepreneurs to clarify their personal goals.

"You could be quite satisfied catering to a few clients but I wanted to touch a million lives."

Understanding one's vision allows entrepreneurs to chase opportunities that align with their aspirations. Furthermore, it is important to build a supportive team.

"You are gonna spend a tremendous amount of time with a set of people."

Choosing the right team is crucial, as the journey can be long and challenging. Enjoying the process and having fun with the team makes the experience worthwhile.

The Journey Continues

Arjun's story illustrates that success is not merely about individual talent but the collective effort of a dedicated team. As he continues to explore new horizons, Arjun remains committed to personal growth and enriching his life experiences.

For those on their own journeys, Arjun’s insights serve as a reminder that the path to success is multifaceted. It requires a blend of preparation, the right mindset, and a strong support system. The journey may be filled with challenges, but with determination and a focus on continuous learning, the possibilities are limitless.

"The real thing is in the journey. Outcome is not in our control."

Ultimately, it is the experiences, relationships, and lessons learned along the way that define true success. The journey of Arjun Nair continues, inspiring others to embrace their paths with courage and purpose.

Listen now!

Other ways to listen:

Apple Podcast | Amazon Music

Until next time,

Your Host,

Divakar Vijayasarathy
